Soccer Battles New Mexico at MW Tournament
The University of Wyoming women’s soccer team will take on New Mexico in a semifinal match in the Mountain West Tournament on Thursday at 5 p.m. MT in San Diego, Calif., at the SDSU Sports Deck. Freshman forward Kaitlyn Lomsnes was named the MW’s Offensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year Tuesday after, leading the conference with 22 points on 10 goals and two assists. The Cowgirls look to win their first semifinal game since 2011 when they defeated San Diego State 1-0 in Albuquerque, N.M.
Last time against New Mexico: UW trails in the series, 6-14-4, after this season’s 2-1 loss on Oct. 26 at the UNM Soccer Complex. Wyoming pushed on that Sunday afternoon against the Lobos, finding its lone goal in the fourth minute off a shot from 20 yards out. However, UNM capitalized on two goals in the 47th and 85th minutes. The Cowgirls created many opportunities in the game with 11 shots and four on goal but couldn’t find the equalizing goal.
New Mexico advanced to the semifinals with a 2-1 win over Boise State in the quarter finals on Tuesday. UNM found the game winning goal in the 88th minute from junior forward Lindsey Guice. The Lobos also found the first goal of the game after converting a penalty kick off a hand ball foul in the Broncos box. Boise State evened the match in the 32nd minute off a cross for a shot to find the back of the net.
