Despite outshooting Cal State Northridge, Arizona State was unable to get one past the goal against the Matadors Friday night in a 1-0 loss in its season opener. The only goal of the game came in the first 10 minutes when the Matadors made a counter attack off an Arizona State corner kick. The team will travel to San Diego State on Sunday.

A cross to Stephanie Galarze gave her a one-on-one with Chandler Morris, who had no chance to save the chip shot by Galarze.

ASU started to press much more after giving up the goal and outshot the Matadors 11-6 in the first half in the physical game.

Devin Marshallpicked up Arizona State's only yellow card of the game while Cal Stte Northridge had three yellow cards. The game heard a lot of whistles as Cal State Northridge was whistled for 24 fouls while Arizona State had 11.

Marshall led all players in the game with five shots while Miah Mollay and Nicki Stonetied with Cal State Northridge's Stephanie Norton with the most shots on goal in the game, two. In fact Norton's two shots on goal were their only two shots that Morris had to save after giving up the one goal.

"We made some defensive errors especially in the first half, a couple bad ones that led to their goal," said head coach Kevin Boyd. "We got more chances and outshot them, the problem is the same technical problems we had in parts of the game happened in front of their goal. So although we had more chances we just didn't do anything with them."

Arizona State fought hard down to the last second having one last shot with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game.

Sunday the Sun Devils will remain on the road when they travel south to San Diego State to close out their opening weekend of play with a 1 p.m. (PT) contest against the Aztecs. "We play a really goodSan DiegoStateteam that has really emerged as a legitimate NCAA team on the west coast recently" says head coach Kevin Boyd.

San Diego State has been picked to finish second in the Mountain West Conference this year and also received two first place votes in the conference poll.

The last time Arizona State and San Diego State played was in 2009 as the Sun Devils won by a score of 2-1 at home in a game that went to overtime. Current Sun Devil seniors. Courtney Tinnin and Sierra Joseph each had one assist in that game. Arizona State holds a 4-2-1 record against the Aztecs.
