Soccer Looks to Continue Winning Streak

The University of Wyoming women’s soccer team (4-5-1) returns on the road this weekend against Utah State and Boise State. The Cowgirls play at Utah State on Friday at 3 p.m. MT and Sunday at Boise state at noon. The Cowgirls are coming wins this past weekend against Nevada and UNLV, to move their record at home this season to a perfect 3-0-0.

“We can’t get ahead of ourselves after a 2-0 conference start,” UW head coach Pete Cuadrado said. ”We need to bring the same focus and intensity to training with two tough games on the road this week.”

Last time vs. Utah State: Wyoming and Utah State are tied in the overall series, 3-3-2, with the last meeting on Oct. 6, 2013. The Cowgirls lost the last match against the Aggies at the Chuck and Gloria Bell Field in Logan, Utah.  Wyoming held a 7-1 shot lead in the first half, but neither team scored in the first 45 minutes. The Aggies were able to find the game winner in the 52nd minute. The Cowgirls and Aggies were evenly matched with ten shots each, though the Aggies took the 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.

The Aggies lost to Air Force 1-0 in overtime last Sunday in Colorado Springs, Colo., to fall to 4-4-2 and 0-1-1 MW. After 90 minutes of regulation, neither team found the back of the net. In the first overtime period, Air Force notched a goal off a header near the post. The Aggies outshot the Falcons 22-10 and a 9-4 shot on goal margin.

Last time vs. Boise State: The Cowgirls lead the series, 5-2-1, with the last meeting in the Mountain West Quarterfinals on Nov. 5, 2013. In that match UW fell 3-0 to the Broncos at the New Mexico Soccer Complex in Albuquerque, N.M. The Broncos came out firing with their first goal at the three-minute mark off a shot from the inside the box. At the 42-minute mark Boise State converted a corner kick for a goal. Boise State scored its third goal off a header.

Boise State fell to Colorado College, 3-1, last Sunday at Colorado Springs, Colo.,  to drop to  3-5-3 and 0-2-0 MW. Colorado College scored in the 24th minute off a shot from 10 yards out after dibbling passed the keeper. The Broncos responded with a goal two minutes later on a shot that soared over top of the defenders into the back of the net. In the 58th minute Colorado College found the top right corner for the goal.   Colorado College sealed the victory with its last goal in 69th minute with a shot from 21 yards out for the top of the net just under the crossbar.
