Freshman Kimberly Golden scored what proved to be the match-winner in the 47th minute to lift the Morehead State soccer team over Belmont, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.

The win improved the Eagles to 1-8-1 on the season and 1-1-0 in Ohio Valley Conference play, while the Bruins fell to 4-5-1 and 0-1-1 in league contests.

Golden and sophomore Holly Tilley led the Eagles with a goal and a shot apiece, while freshman goalkeeper Elizabeth Floyd racked up a career-best 10 saves. Belmont outshot the Eagles, 13-5.

“We played a full 90 minutes today,” Head Coach Warren Lipka said. “We got caught flat on their one goal, but we were composed with the lead.”

MSU managed to make its only shot on goal in the first half count. After several offensive chances, Golden crossed the ball from deep in the corner, and the clearance from Belmont goalkeeper Nicole Berner was not enough. Tilley gained possession inside the 18-yard box and slipped the ball just inside the post for her first score of the season.

Golden found herself involved in another scoring play just more than a minute into the second half for MSU. This time, she scored following a BU missed clearance for her second goal of the season.

It didn’t take long for the Bruins to respond as sophomore Rachel Schmidt found herself with the ball at the top of the 18-yard box. She sent a shot past Floyd into the upper corner to cut the lead to 2-1 in the 53rd minute. However, the Eagles held the hosts scoreless for the final 36 minutes.

“This was well deserved for the team,” added Lipka. “They have been working hard, and I am very happy for them.”

The Eagles return home to Jayne Stadium on Friday when they host OVC opponent Tennessee Tech at 7 p.m. ET. Live stats will be available at MSUEagles.com, and the match will be shown live on the OVC Digital Network.
