South Florida men tie Cal State Fullerton
September 6, 2010
(Moraga, CA) – South Florida men’s soccer wrapped up the opening weekend of the 2010 regular season with a 1-1 deadlock against Cal State Fullerton in the final match of the Saint Mary’s Invitational on a warm Sunday afternoon in Moraga at Saint Mary’s Stadium. The Dons (1-0-1) scored first, but could not create the go-ahead goal and played a man down for the final 40 minutes of the contest against the Titans (0-0-2).
Senior forward Jeff Penna opened the scoring for the Dons in the 43rd minute after breaking free in the box and rocketed a shot to the far post off a feed from freshman midfielder Karl Kraft. USF held a 5-2 shot advantage in the opening period, led by Penna’s pair.
Cal State Fullerton got on the board in the 70th minute as Nick Posthuma delivered the equalizer on a failed clearance.
“Any time you have an emotional win on Friday, you want to see how your team bounces back on Sunday,” USF head coach Erik Visser said. “We came out and played 110 minutes against a quality opponent in 85 degree heat and played a considerable amount of time with 10 men. The team showed a lot of character. It was a good weekend for us and I think we have something to build on. Overall we have a long way to go but for now I am pleased with this young team.”
USF played a man down, beginning in the 73rd minute in a match that featured some head scratching calls, no-calls and generally curious officiating. The Dons were whistled for 27 fouls during regulation and overtime compared to just 11 for the Titans.
Sophomore goalkeeper Brendan Roslund (1-0-1) preserved the tie with two brilliant saves knocking down and smothering two point blank shots by Fullerton’s Celso Alvarez first with 120 and then 20 seconds remaining in the second overtime session. Roslund finished the day with eight saves. Trevor Whiddon (0-0-2) collected three saves while facing 10 shots for the Titans.
Cal State Fullerton held a commanding 20-10 shot advantage for the match, 18-5 after the intermission and held a 7-1 lead in corner kicks. Penna, Kraft and senior forward Bryan Burke led the way for USF offensively with two shots each.
Freshman forward Tanner Smith, who provided the game-winner for the Dons in their 1-0 upset win against No. 9 Northwestern Friday, earned all-tournament honors along with Burke and freshman defender Fred Loechen.
San Francisco returns to action when it hosts Cal State Bakersfield Saturday, September 11. Match time against the Roadrunners is set for 2:00 PM at Negoesco Stadium. Live audio and video will be available on USFDons.com courtesy of Yahoo Broadcast.
