South Florida women fall to Providence
October 10, 2009
TAMPA - Playing in their annual Think Pink match the University of South Florida women's soccer team had their five match unbeaten streak as the Bulls fell to the visiting Providence Friars, 1-0, at the USF Soccer Stadium.
The Friars would get on the board first in the 36th minute into the game off of a corner kick from Alyssa Gillespie. Gillespie would bend the ball in and as Bahar Sansar misplayed the ball and deflected the ball into the back of the net which gave the Friars a 1-0 lead that they would not relinquish.
USF would shut down any type of attack put together by the Friars for the remainder of the game.
The goal was the first Lofton-Malachi has given up in 247 minutes in goal which dated back to the Bulls 2-1 win over West Virginia.
The Bulls missed a number of golden opportunities but their best may have had been with just over nine minutes remaining. Sophomore Molly Stack would send a great cross pass to Taylor Patterson and Patterson's header was just a little high as it skimmed the cross bar.
The Friars dodged another bullet just a few minutes later when Friar keeper Jill Schott was caught out of position but Rehana Murani missed the open shot with an errant shot wide to the right.
The Friars would weather a series of three corners kicks as Lofton-Malachi moved up into the box as an extra attacker. The Bulls were unable to put anything on net.
The Bulls finished the game with 10 shots, five of which were on goal. The Friars recorded eight shots over the course of the game and also had five shots on goal.
Mallori Lofton-Malachi recorded a total of four saves in goal for the Bulls and allowed one goal. Providence goalkeeper Jill Schott recorded her second shutout of the year for the Friars and had five saves on the night.
With the loss, the Bulls fall to 5-5-3 and 2-2-2 in the conference and will likely fall out of third place in the American division.
USF will now look forward as they get ready to take on No. 18 Connecticut at home on Sunday, October 11. The game is set to start at noon. The match will mark the final home match of the 2009 season. USF will honor its four seniors in a pregame ceremony.
