Spartans avoid early PK, beat Patriots 2-0
FLORENCE, SC – UNC Greensboro sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Simmons stopped a penalty kick by Francis Marion University senior Yasmin Bunter and the Spartans scored late in the first half and early in the second half to capture a 2-0 victory over the Patriots, Friday evening (Oct. 4) in non-conference women’s soccer action.
Francis Marion will play host to Elon University on Sunday at 2 p.m. on Hartzler Field.
The Patriots had a chance to grab a 1-0 advantage in the 12th minute when they were awarded the penalty kick, but Simmons came up with the first of her three saves, denying Bunter.
FMU did however hold the Spartans (6-4-1) and looked to be headed into the locker room at halftime tied at 0-0, but freshman midfielder Georgia Brown scored with only 56 ticks remaining to put UNCG up 1-0.
Sophomore KK Deutrich doubled the margin to 2-0 with a rebound goal at 48:35. Following that score, FMU’s Bunter and junior defender Sandy Odembo both took shots that forced saves by Simmons over the next seven minutes that could have cut the deficit in half.
UNCG outshot Francis Marion 19-8, while both teams earned six corner kicks apiece.
FMU sophomore goalkeeper Taylor O’Berry recorded two saves. Bunter led Francis Marion with four shots.
