St. Francis Brooklyn Wins Bklyn Bridge Cup

September 6, 2015

The St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers defeated the St. Bonaventure Bonnies, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 5. With the victory, the Terriers (2-0-1) clinched the Astroturf Brooklyn Bridge Cup Championship as a result of LIU Brooklyn's loss to UMass-Lowell.

The Terriers used two goals in the first half, an own goal and a tally by senior John Makaya.
Junior defender Fabian Suele added an insurance marker in the second half to secure the win.

"We want to win every game at home. Anytime you win a trophy it is great," head coach Tom Giovatto commented. "They (the defense) are doing a really good job. It starts with Jack (Binks) and Cyril (Coisne) in the middle. This season, the midfielders are helping out and giving us good defensive efforts."

The Terriers wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Their offensive pressure forced an own goal from the Bonnies just four minutes into the contest.

The early tally got the Terriers offense going. In the 9th minute, sophomore Lukas Hauer was denied by St. Bonaventure goalkeeper Bobby Diaz after a nice centering pass from sophomore Dominick Falanga.

St. Francis Brooklyn came back in the 16th minute with another quality chance but sophomore Lukas Hauer fired just wide of the far post after a cross by Makaya.

The Terriers struck again in the 28th minute to make it 2-0. Makaya received a cross from senior midfielder Harry Odell and beat Diaz with a blast to make it 2-0.

The hosts continued to create chances as freshman Leonard Kirschner collected a long punt from keeper Jack Binks, and chipped an attempt over the cross bar in the 39th minute. In the 40th minute, Kirschner created another chance as he made a move around a defender and just missed the post.

The offense continued the pressure in the second half.  Junior defender Fabian Suele capitalized on a textbook give and go with senior midfielderVincent Bezecourt in the 58th minute to make it 3-0.

St. Francis Brooklyn continued to apply the pressure after they netted their third goal. In the 63rd minute, Falanga headed the Bezecourt corner wide of the net, and in the 78th minute Kirschner made another nifty move and just missed the far post.

The Terriers outshot the Bonnies 20-4 in the match.

Red-shirt goalkeeper
Binks and junior goalkeeper Seth Erdman made a save a piece in the combined shutout. The Terriers have not allowed a goal this season in 290:00 minutes of play.

Makaya, Bezecourt, Suele, and Collyns Laokandi all were named to the Astroturf Brooklyn Bridge Cup All-Tournament Team.

The Terriers return home to Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 5 on Wednesday evening when they host the Lafayette Leopards. Kickoff is slated for 7:00
