A player listed by one evaluation source as the nation's No. 1 recruit is among a class of six that have signed letters of intent to play men's soccer at Stanford next fall.

Coach Bret Simon said the class has addressed the team's biggest needs. It also includes three players ranked among topdrawersoccer.com's top 100 prospects.

Dersu Abolfathi, a midfielder/forward from Irvine, Calif., is rated No. 1, defender Hunter Gorskie (Marlboro Township, N.J.) is No. 30, and forward Adam Jahn (El Macero, Calif.) is No. 63.

Midfielder/forward Eric Anderson (San Francisco) offers another attacking option and goalkeepers Jason Dodson (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Galen Perkins (Westbrook, Maine) will compete for the right to succeed 2009 senior John Moore.

"I'm thrilled at the group we've been able to assemble," Simon said. "We've been able to address our pressing needs, and particularly build a quality attacking base for the future."

The following is a closer look at each player, with comments from Simon:

Dersu Abolfathi, MF/F (Irvine, Calif./University HS/L.A. Galaxy Academy): Has great soccer intelligence and sees the game at an extremely high level, with the skills to put that vision in play. Rated as the nation's No. 1 recruit by topdrawersoccer.com, Abolfathi has been active on U.S. youth national teams (most recently at U17), spent 1½ years with U.S. under-17 residency program now plays with the Los Angeles Galaxy under-18 Academy team.

Eric Anderson, midfield/forward (San Francisco/University HS/Marin FC): Has great pace, super one-on-one skills and can play as an attacker or midfield player, in wide positions or centrally. Anderson is a regional Olympic Development Program player who plays for University High in San Francisco and Marin FC, the same club that produced current Stanford player Tommy Ryan.

Jason Dodson, goalkeeper (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lakeridge HS/Lake Oswego SC): Technically clean and very aggressive, with a strong command of the goal area. Dodson is a regional ODP player who stars for Lakeridge High and Lake Oswego SC.


Hunter Gorskie, defender (Marlboro Township, N.J./Marlboro HS/PDA of New Jersey): A tough, smart defender who reads the play well and is able to destroy opponents' attacks, and trigger those of his own team. A regional ODP player who plays for Marlboro High and the Player Development Academy of New Jersey. Rated as the nation's No. 30 recruit by topdrawersoccer.com

Adam Jahn, forward (El Macero, Calif./Jesuit HS/San Juan SC): Tall and athletic with outstanding skills, Jahn is capable of creating and scoring goals, and has done so at every level he's played. Jahn plays for U.S. under-18 national team and is rated as the nation's No. 63 recruit by topdrawersoccer.com. Mother (Barbara) is the head women's swimming and diving coach at UC Davis. Father (Tom) coached swimming at UCLA for seven years. Selected as the Gatorade California player of the year last spring for Jesuit High in Carmichael and stars for the San Juan Lightning.

Galen Perkins, goalkeeper (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook HS/Seacoast United): Impressed coaches with his athleticism and work ethic at Stanford's college ID camp. He has played a highly influential role in the emergence of Seacoast United into the upper echelon of East Coast clubs. Set a Wesbrook High record with nine shutouts last season.
