Stanford women make strong statement

Stanford women make strong statement
October 19, 2009

We’ve got your college review right here. Let’s get into some of the top moments from another week in college soccer.

Marquee Match: The Stanford women validated their top spot in our rankings, knocking off UCLA 2-0 on Sunday in a matchup of two Pac-10 powerhouses. Stanford used a second-half own goal and a Camille Levin strike to notch the victory and complete a Southern California sweep, having beaten USC 4-0 on Friday.

Boston College men's college soccer player Charlie Rugg.Charlie Rugg scored 2 goals against UNC.
Will the Cardinal (13-0) lose a match this season? Well, the program has certainly navigated the most difficult part of its schedule with a Pacific Northwest trip to Washington State and Washington representing the only two remaining road games.

Upset of the Week: The Boston College men knocked off North Carolina behind two goals from freshman Charlie Rugg. It was a nice moment for the Eagles who were no doubt hit hard by the news last week of 2006 tri-captain Jamen Amato dying from cancer, as well as former BC standout Charlie Davies being in a career-threatening auto accident.

He Ain't Heavy...: Another connection to Davies came in the form of Justin Davies, Charlie's younger brother who plays at San Diego State. Justin effectively marked PAC-10 leading scorer Andrew Wiedeman and recorded an assist in the Aztecs' Sunday win over the Bears. He had just returned Saturday from Washington D.C. where he had been helping attend to his brother in the hospital.

(Formerly the Beatdown of the Week, now known as ‘Portland women Beatdown of the Week’): The Pilots put the hurtin’ on another pair of victims last week, drubbing Pepperdine 6-0 and Loyola Marymount 4-0.

Michelle Enyeart, Charney Burk and Halley Kreminski figured prominently in the wins as Portland continues to use the West Coast Conference as a tuneup for the NCAA tournament.

TopDrawerSoccer.com Jinx: Just as we suggested the California men may be poised to capture the Pac-10 conference the Golden Bears lost two straight for the first time all season and fell to No. 15 in our rankings.

That’s the last time we go out on a limb. Sorry Cal.

Shhh ... Keep it quiet: The Monmouth men are all the way up to No. 9 in the rankings. If they keep this up we may have to educate ourselves on the unsung Northeast Conference.

Record-breaking Performance: Georgetown women’s Sara Jordan set the school’s all-time goal-scoring mark with her 27th goal in a 3-0 win over Pittsburgh on Friday.

Quote of the Week: “It’s something prior to the season I hoped she would do. I don’t think she will let it show but inside she has to be very proud of this accomplishment.”
