Piscataway, N.J. - The Stony Brook women's soccer team battled for 90 minutes against No. 21 Rutgers, but came up short in a 2-0 defeat at Yurcak Field on Friday night. Junior Ashley Castanio (Oceanside, N.Y.) was outstanding in goal, making a career-high 10 saves in the defeat.

• April Price broke a scoreless deadlock in the 72nd minute, taking a feed from Rachel Cole on the left side of the box and placing it just inside the right post
• With Stony Brook desperately trying to tie the score late, the Seawolves were caught up the field and Jonelle Filigno raced in on a counterattack breakaway from 40 yards out. Filigno deked around Castanio and rolled the ball toward the empty net. Castanio recovered and got a hand on the shot, but it deflected right to Maria Gerew, who fired it under the crossbar in the 88th minute.

• Rutgers outshot Stony Brook, 16-4, and had all 12 shots on goal in the match
• Filigno, a member of the Canadian National Team, led all players with five shots (all on goal)
• Stony Brook was issued a pair of yellow cards in the second half to freshmen Meagan Hallworth (Simsbury, Conn.) and Tessa Devereaux(Fayetteville, N.Y.)
• Stony Brook drops to 4-2-1 with the defeat, while No. 21 Rutgers improves to 6-1-0.

Key Plays

• Devereaux nearly gave the Seawolves the lead when her shot from well outside the box glanced off the crossbar in the 13th minute
• Castanio made several key stops in the early going, including a point-blank save on Erica Skroski in the 24th minute
• Junior Larissa Nysch (Dresher, Pa.) had a great opportunity on a breakaway with 31 minutes remaining, but Rutgers keeper Emmy Simpkins came out and tackled the ball away at the top of the box
• Stony Brook was awarded a free kick just outside the box in the 70th minute, but Nysch's attempt sailed just wide of the right post
• Castanio again came up large with under 20 minutes remaining, denying Skroski in close off a deflection following a free kick. Ten minutes later, Castanio got a hand on a header by Brianne Reed to preserve a 1-0 scoreline
• Stony Brook had one final chance to equalize with three minutes remaining as freshman Raven Edwards (West Orange, N.J.) collected a loose ball in the box, but her shot attempt was off target from a difficult angle
