Albany, N.Y. - Senior Leonardo Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y.) scored a goal for the fifth straight match, notching the game-winner in the 30th minute to lead the Stony Brook men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Albany Saturday evening. The win extends Stony Brook's unbeaten streak to six matches, and the Seawolves open America East play 1-0.



Coach Ryan Anatol's Reaction

"I felt like it was a dominant performance. We were very good defensively tonight. We were able to press them and pin them. We eliminated their chances. On offense, we tried to be aggressive against Albany, which plays back deep on defense. I thought we could have put the game away a lot sooner, but we were not able to finish our chances."



Goal Recaps

• In the 30th minute, a foul on Albany led to a free kick. Fernandes, from about 20 yards out, rocketed a kick around the defensive wall and past the Great Danes goalkeeper at the top left corner, similar to his free kick goal against Buffalo on Sept. 16.

Near Misses

• In the 15th minute, Fernandes had a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but Albany's Tim Allen made the save.
• In the 52nd and 61st minutes, senior Berian Gobeil Cruz (Montreal, Quebec) had headers that just missed, one wide and one high. 


The Numbers Game

• Stony Brook (7-2-1) outshot the Great Danes 12-2 and held them without a shot on goal. Stony Brook also had a 10-0 advantage on corners.
• Fernandes now has a goal in each of the last five matches and at least a point in 14 of his last 16 matches.
• The goal was the fourth game-winner of the season for Fernandes.
• Fernandes surpassed Charlie Matos (1985-88) for third all-time in Stony Brook history in career goals with 29.
• Senior Stefan Manz (Bronx, N.Y.) became the program's all-time leader in shutouts with the 16th of his career and tied Corey DeRosa (1992-94) for first all-time in goalkeeper wins.

• The Seawolves are now 15-0-1 under Anatol when they score the first goal of the game.
• Stony Brook is now 5-0-2 against Albany since the start of the 2007 season and has not allowed the Great Danes to score a goal in regular season matchups since 2006.
• The shutout is Stony Brook's fifth of the season.
• Stony Brook's six-match unbeaten streak is its longest since posting six straight in 2005. Four of those six in 2005 and in 2012 came on the road.
