Stony Brook can't finish comeback at UML

Lowell, Mass. - After falling behind 3-0 to UMass Lowell, the Stony Brook men's soccer team fought back with a barrage of second-half opportunities, but the #Seawolves could not complete the comeback, falling short in a 3-2 loss to the River Hawks Saturday night at Cushing Field.
 
The loss extends Stony Brook's winless streak to four matches as the #Seawolves fall to 5-7-1 overall and 1-2-1 in America East. UMass Lowell picks up its third win of the year and first-ever America East victory (3-12-0, 1-3-0).
 
Goal Recaps
  • In the third minute, UMass Lowell's Wuilito Fernandes took a cross from Kevin Zapata and slammed the ball home from the top left corner of the box.
  • In the 11th minute, UMass Lowell's Homero Morais received a cross from Eric Martin and slotted the ball home.
  • In the 53rd minute, Morais scored again, this time from Zapata on a cross as he netted the ball inside the right post.
  • In the 67th minute, senior Will Casey (Setauket, N.Y.) smashed a shot that was initially stopped, but the rebound went right to freshman Kofi Ramirez Osei-Tutu, who converted the goal.
  • In the 81st minute, sophomore Martin Giordano (Weston, Fla.) provided a header to freshman Favio Sbarra (Caracas, Venezuela) on a break, and Sbarra lofted it over the River Hawks keeper for an easy goal.
 
Strong Chances
  • In the 59th minute, the #Seawolves had a strong chance as sophomore Alejandro Fritz's shot was stopped by a River Hawks defender on the line.
  • A mère minute after scoring its first goal, Stony Brook again threatened, but again a shot was stopped by a defender, this time on Casey's attempt.
  • In the waning minutes with a chance to tie, sophomore Troy Manheimer's 88th minute shot at the equalizer was stopped by the UML keeper.
 
The Numbers Game
  • Stony Brook outshot UMass Lowell 14-12 and had more shots on goal, 8-5.
  • Ten of Stony Brook's 14 shots came in the second half.
  • Two of UMass Lowell's six saves were team saves.
  • Osei-Tutu's goal was the first of his career.
  • Sbarra's goal was his second of his career and first since Aug. 30.
  • Casey's assist was his first of the season.
  • Giordano now has a team-high five assists.
 
News & Notes
  • Stony Brook is now 1-3-1 all-time vs. UMass Lowell. This was the first meeting as Div. I opponents. The River Hawks are in their first season as a Div. I institution.
  • This is just the third time in the last four seasons that Stony Brook has failed to record at least one win in two consecutive conference matches.
  • Halfway through the conference schedule, Stony Brook sits in a three-way tie with Hartford and Albany for fifth place in America East.
