Stony Brook comes back to top Temple, 4-3

September 25, 2011

Junior Kyle Schlesinger (Selden, N.Y.) scored a game-winning goal with six minutes remaining in regulation as the Stony Brook men's soccer team came back from a two-goal, second-half deficit to top the Temple Owls 4-3 Sunday night. The victory is Stony Brook's third-straight comeback win.

With the game tied at 3-3 and overtime looming, Schlesinger ripped a shot towards the net that Temple goal keeper Bobby Rosato got a hand on, but it still it reached the back of the net for the score.

Schlesinger's goal had completed an incredible comeback as the Seawolves had fallen behind 3-1 in the second half. SBU actually had a 1-0 lead early on a 23rd minute goal from junior Antonio Crespi (North Babylon, N.Y.). Then the Owls scored goals six minutes apart to go up 2-1 at halftime.

Not even two minutes into the second half, Temple scored again on a Jake Lister goal to make it 3-1 in favor of the Owls. Junior Leonardo Fernandes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) cut the deficit to one goal by converting a penalty kick attempt in the 48th minute.

Fernandes continued to pressure the Owls defense as he had a shot saved in the 70th minute, but he then found the back of the net again as he scored in the 74th minute to tie the game and set up Schlesinger's heroics.

Schlesinger's game-winner made sophomore goalkeeper Carlos Villa (Caracas, Venezuela) a winner in his first start of the season. He made three saves.

Stony Brook outshot Temple in the game 17-14 overall and 8-6 on goal. The game was a physical contest that resulted in eight cards issued, six to Temple.

Stony Brook has ended the non-conference season with an even 4-4-2 record, including quality wins over High Point, Fairleigh Dickinson and tonight's game over Temple. The Seawolves will open America East play Friday at New Hampshire at 3:30 p.m.
