Stony Brook men draw with Quinnipiac
September 24, 2009
Hamden, Conn. (September 23, 2009) –Anthony Rogic (Boonton, N.J.) preserved it with two outstanding saves in the second half in the Stony Brook men’s soccer team’s 1-1 double overtime tie at Quinnipiac on Wednesday. Freshman Kyle Schlesinger (Selden, N.Y.) scored 1:09 before halftime to tie the game at one and redshirt freshman An Rogic, who finished with four saves, faced just five shots on goals. The Seawolves, who outshot the Bobcats, 28-8, dominated the ball in the second half and both overtimes.
Quinnipiac scored first, getting a goal from Dwayne Mars in the 20th minute. Philip Suprise made a run down the right side and sent a perfect cross to Mars who headed it home past Rogic.
Stony Brook appeared to tie the game late in the second half, but freshman Leonardo Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y.) was called offside just before heading the ball past Bobcats keeper Freddy Hall.
Just over a minute before halftime, the Seawolves got the equalizer. Schlesinger stole the ball, dribbled 12 yards into space, then eluded a defender before blasting a 20 yard shot into the left corner for the first goal of his collegiate career.
Save for a few possessions, Stony Brook thoroughly dominated the second half. Outshooting Quinnipiac, 15-3, in the second 45, the Seawolves had three quality scoring opportunities in just a three minute span. In the 52nd minute, freshman Antonio Crespi’s (North Babylon, N.Y.) was saved and parried over the crossbar by Hall. Two minutes later, freshman Berian Gobeil (Montreal, Quebec) had a 32 yard bomb but his shot went wide left. Senior James Palumbo (Carmel, N.Y.) also had a shot but his too went wide.
In the 68th minute, Crespi almost put the Seawolves ahead. A cross misplayed by Hall found Crespi all alone in the box but his shot went off the crossbar and cleared away.
Rogic made two tremendous saves late in the second half. In the 76th minute, Rogic parried a ball over the crossbar and made a diving save on Suprise in the 83rd minute.
Stony Brook closes out its non-conference schedule at home on Saturday evening against Adelphi. Kick-off is slated for 7 pm.
