Stony Brook tipped by Vermont in America East opener

September 26, 2011

Burlington, Vt. - The Stony Brook women's soccer team fell short in its America East opener on Sunday, dropping a 1-0 decision at the hands of Vermont.

The Seawolves (2-8-0, 0-1-0 America East) had ample opportunities to score, particularly in the first half, but could not find a breakthrough. Freshman Regan Bosnyak (Newington, Conn.) powered a strike into the arms of Vermont keeper Sarah Leiby for the game's first chance six minutes from the start. Then sophomore Caitlin Pfeiffer (Holland, N.Y.) was presented with a glorious chance off a cross from the right, but her finish sailed over the bar in the 20th minute.

"We were unlucky not to get one or two goals in the first half," Stony Brook head coach Sue Ryan admitted. "We moved the ball well and were hitting our rhythm in the first half, but the fact that we didn't score made a difference in the game."

Vermont's Ellie Mills finished a cross from Midori Eckenstein for the game's only goal in the 56th minute. The goal came from a cross, which Mills tucked away in front of the goal.

Seawolves' keeper Chelsea Morales (Temecula, Calif.) was otherwise outstanding on the day, making several key stops to keep Stony Brook in the match. The sophomore made a big kick save on a breakaway with five minutes remaining and turned away two shots in quick succession in the final minute, including a diving save off a rebound in front.

The Catamounts (3-5-3, 1-0-0 America East) outshot the Seawolves 17-5 and attempted eight corners to Stony Brook's three. Morales made eight saves on the day, including six in the second half.

The Seawolves will look to pick up their first America East win on Thursday when they host UMBC at 7 p.m.
