Stony Brook's Fritz named Rookie of the Week
August 27, 2012
Cambridge, Mass. - Stony Brook men's soccer freshman midfielder Alejandro Fritz (Budapest, Hungary) has been named America East Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday morning. Fritz scored the game-winner in Stony Brook's impressive 5-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson last Friday.
Fritz scored a goal on the very first shot of his collegiate career. In the seventh minute, a Seawolves throw-in was headed by an FDU defender, and Fritz chested down the ball, dribbled once and then swung a shot with his left leg in traffic about seven yards away from the net. The ball easily got past the FDU goalkeeper into the bottom right corner of the net for the goal.
The goal served as the game-winner in the shutout, though the Seawolves went on to post four more goals in their strong season opener. The win was over a Knights team that had finished 56 in the 2011 NCAA RPI rankings and was picked to finish second in the traditionally strong Northeast Conference.
Fritz and the Seawolves play again on Tuesday at Villanova at 4 p.m.
