Strong Second Half Carries Warhawks to Win

September 6, 2017

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team scored three second half goals en route to a 3-0 victory over Olivet College Wednesday afternoon at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The Warhawks improve to 2-1 with the win while the Comets fall to 1-2.

UW-W had several chances to score in the first half, firing three shots on goal. Peter Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East)Hozai Ceballos (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) and Steven Wright (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) all tested Comet keeper Brendan Morse, but Morse stopped all three.

On the other end, Chris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) kept Olivet out of the net when he stopped their lone first half shot on goal in the 15th minute.

The Warhawks finally broke into the scoring column just three and a half minutes into the second half. Peter Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) played a ball to Kevin Mesich (West Allis, Wis./West Allis Hale) that Mesich pushed passed the keeper for his second goal of the season and a 1-0 Warhawk lead.

Seven minutes later Lucas Monterroso (Montevideo, Uruguay/Colegio Jesus Maria) played a ball into the box that bounced around a bit and found the foot of Yoshihiko Fukushima (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) for a 2-0 lead.

Finally, after a Comet foul just outside the penalty box, Peter Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) fired a free kick into the lower right hand corner of the net for his third goal of the year and a 3-0 advantage.

Shortly after the third Warhawk goal, Head Coach Tony Guinn used his substitutions liberally to get a total of 26 men into the match.

Toney Anderson (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) came on in relief of Lucatorto for the final 28:32 and made two saves to preserve the shutout.

Coach Guinn cited the play of several players stating, "Peter Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East)is a special player; that was a great goal he scored. I also think Kyle Clancy (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) did a nice job of holding down the midfield."

As the Warhawks head to Augsburg on Friday for their next match at 7:30 p.m. Coach Guinn is excited about how his team is playing.

"I'm really happy that we are giving up just a half a goal a game and we have two shutouts under our belt," Guinn added after the match.

UW-W is on the road for their next five matches, returning to Whitewater on September 23 for a game against Webster University at 7 p.m.
