Strong second half not enough for ‘Roos, Northwestern takes 2-0 decision
(Evanston, Ill.) – The Northwestern Wildcats scored goals early in each half on their way to a 2-0 win over UMKC in men’s soccer action on Labor Day Monday at Lakeside Field.
The Wildcats (1-1-1) struck with a goal in the 11th minute on a header from Reed Losee, receiving a cross from Scott Lakin. The majority of the shots in the opening half went to NU, with an 11-2 advantage at the break.
The ‘Roos (0-3-0) moved junior David Sarabia back up front in the game, after playing goalkeeper throughout the preseason and first two games. He played up top as a freshman and sophomore. He had a shot on goal in the 14th minute, the only one of the half on frame for UMKC. Also back in the lineup was sophomore defender Jeffrey Stezovsky, after sitting out the first two games due to injury.
The final period was much stronger for the ‘Roos, but a goal by the Wildcats’ Oliver Kupe just three minutes in made it 2-0 in favor of the home club. The shot count was only 4-3 in favor of the Wildcats during the half. UMKC started to hit its groove, but it didn’t turn into goals this time.
