Syracuse Defeats Clemson 1-0
Syracuse Defeats #19 Clemson
SYRACUSE, NY—Alex Halis scored the game’s lone goal in leading Syracuse to a 1-0 victory over Clemson in an Atlantic Coast Conference men’s soccer match at Syracuse, NY Friday night.
Syracuse improves to 10-6-1 overall, 3-6-1 in the ACC. Clemson falls to 10-5-2 overall, and 5-3-2 in league play.
At the 60:34 mark, Chris Nanco took a shot that was deflected back to Halis. Halis faked right and sent a left-footed shot into the netting for his sixth goal of the year.
“It was one of those nights when we just couldn’t get the ball into the goal,” said Clemson Head Coach Mike Noonan. “We created chances throughout the match. We played well enough to win, and a mistake caused us to give up a goal. I thought Amadou Dia, Phanuel Kavita and Kyle Fisher played well as did Manolo Sanchez.
“We will work hard this week and prepare for Duke next Friday,” said Noonan.
The Tigers took 12 shots to Syracuse’s five attempts. The Tigers also had six corner kicks, while Syracuse had one.
Clemson had opportunities late in the match. Austen Burnikel took a shot that was saved in the 77th minute. Ara Amirkhanian took a shot that went wide in the 78th minute. The Tigers’ last shot was in the 86th minute of play as Alexandre Happi’s attempt went wide of the goal.
Clemson will play host to Duke next Friday night at Historic Riggs Field in the last match of the regular season for the Tigers.
