March 9, 2009

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. * Transfers Michael Farfan and Stephen McCarthy, who were each freshman All-America selections and two-time conference picks in California, highlight a group of eight newcomers for the University of North Carolina men*s soccer program, head coach Elmar Bolowich announced Wednesday.

In addition to Farfan (Wildomar, Calif.) and McCarthy (Colleyville, Texas), who previously starred at Cal State Fullerton and Santa Clara, respectively, the Tar Heels also added six prep standouts. Farfan,
McCarthy and German defender Max Mosch (Karlsruhe, Germany) enrolled at Carolina in January and are training with the team this spring.

Highlighting the group of newcomers that will arrive in August 2009 is forward Enzo Martinez (Rock Hill, S.C.), who is a two-time South Carolina state player of the year and needed just three years to become
the state*s all-time leading scorer with 143 goals.

Also inking with the Tar Heels were: goalkeeper Scott Goodwin (Raleigh), midfielder Martin Murphy (Cary), defender Josh Rice (Midlothian, Va.) and midfielder Alex Walters (Bradenton, Fla.).

*In Michael Farfan and Stephen McCarthy we added two transfer students to our roster, and both are outstanding midfield players and add some maturity to our team,* said Bolowich. *The freshmen class
is a very strong group of players. We added depth and balance to all our positions on the field.*

The Tar Heels are coming off a national runner-up finish and reached the program*s third College Cup in 2008.
