For the first time, the TopDrawerSoccer College Player of the Year is a freshman. Grand Canyon forward Junior Diouf achieved this by delivering outstanding statistics and memorable performances. The Penn Fusion and CSA Bergen product is not only poised to become the first freshman since 1999 to lead the nation in goals, but the quality and significance of his goals set him apart. He led the program to a conference tournament title and its first Sweet Sixteen appearance, and on five occasions this season, the Senegalese-born forward scored in the final ten minutes to tie or win a game.

Diouf’s first display of late-game heroics came in the season opener, when he scored an equalizer in the 81st minute and then secured a dramatic winner with just 14 seconds left. That match showcased his talent, with the first goal a remarkable solo effort and the second the first of his seven game-winning goals this season, the second-highest total nationally. Then there was his final goal of the year, an 88th-minute game-winner to shock San Diego and send Grand Canyon to its first-ever Sweet Sixteen berth. His consistent contributions were key to the Lopes’ improvement from five wins last season to 14 this year.

Looking ahead, the question is whether Diouf will return for another season or pursue a professional career. He has already attracted interest from teams both in the United States and internationally.
