Texas State Soccer Improves to 4-4; Beats Houston Baptist 2-1

September 23, 2011

San Marcos, Texas – Kendell Webber scored her second goal in as many games, to help lead the Texas State soccer team back to .500 with a 2-1 win over Houston Baptist, Friday night at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. Texas State dominated offensively, outshooting the Huskies 17-9.

With a 1-0 lead coming out of halftime, Webber headed in her third goal of the year, a minute into the second period, off an entering pass from Taylor Kelly for a 2-0 Texas State lead.

The Bobcats first got on the board in the 13th minute when four players surrounded the goal, before Erica Michaud tapped a pass to Felicia Leask for her first goal of the year.

It appeared Texas State had a highlight goal late in the first half when Gabbi Cottee sent a cross from the right sideline from about 40 yards out to Katie Herrick on the back post to headed it in the air. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, offsides was called, keeping the score at 1-0.

In the first 45 minutes, the Bobcats outshot Houston Baptist 11-4, including a team-leading three shots from Webber, who entered the game as the team’s top scorer on the season with five points after last week’s overtime game winner against La. Tech.

Webber nearly connected on another header, this time on a corner from Sydney Curry, midway through the second half. The ball instead went wide right, keeping the Bobcat goal total at two.

Houston Baptist scored its only goal of the night when Natalie Hager got a breakaway, after appearing to be offside, and converting against Lauren Frazier to cut the deficit to 2-1.

With 1:41 to go in the game, Houston Baptist forward Brandi Hart had what looked to be another breakaway, but the shot went wide, preserving the win for the Bobcats.

Texas State will return to action to wrap up nonconference play on Sunday at 1 p.m., when it hosts Grambling State.
