Thorpe, Smith pace King to win over Brevard

September 6, 2014

BRISTOL, Tenn. – It was only fitting that when two teams with nicknames of Tornado and Tornados got together, there would be a weather delay. The King University and Brevard College women's soccer teams sat through a two hour delay due to lightning and rain before eventually kicking off the 2014 season. When the ball was put in play, the Tornado of King showed their presence on the offense end with Rachel Thorpe scoring three times and Miranda Smith twice in the 5-0 King win.

Thorpe wasted no time getting King on the board as she found a loose ball to the right of the Brevard goal and shot it off the crossbar and the far post before going in to give King (1-0) the 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. She struck again just three minutes later when Lindsay Curtis found Paula Doran off a corner kick. Doran then served a ball into the box where it found Thorpe's foot before finding the back of the net.

Smith stretched the lead to 3-0 with her first career goal in the 38th minute. The Soddy Daisy native took a nice through ball from Shalisa Barnett and Smith beat the keeper to the left hand side of the net to give King a 3-0 halftime advantage.

In the second half, Thorpe earned the hat trick in the first minute of the frame. The Ontario, Canada native ripped a shot from the left side of the box that ricocheted off the crossbar and in. Smith netted an insurance goal in the 60th minute when she took a pass from Catherine Walsh and buried the shot into the back of the net.

King outshot Brevard (0-1) 17-4, including 11-1 in the second half. The Tornado also had three corner kicks while holding Brevard to none. Nicole Dagher earned the win in net for the Tornado after making one save.

King will be in action again on Saturday when they host Mars Hill University at 2:00 p.m.
