Tiger Women Trim LIU Brooklyn, 3-0

September 22, 2013

Brooklyn, N.Y. - Junior Rhianna Zalewski, senior Emily Banes and freshman Ariana Rinda each scored a goal as the Tigers (5-4-1) recorded a 3-0 win over LIU-Brooklyn (2-6-1) Sunday afternoon at LIU Field.

Banes has now scored 10 goals through 10 games. Rinda's tally was the first of her career, and Zalewski added her first goal of the season. The Tigers took an early 2-0 lead by the 12th minute and never looked back.

Both of Towson's first two goals came on breakaways. Zalewski drew first blood, redirecting an uncontrolled LIU save into the back of the net at 7:56. Junior Katie Ponce took the initial shot that caused the rebounding save and got the assist. Just two and a half minutes later, Banes contributed her goal when she took a pass from junior Sofia Read and lofted a shot from 18 yards into the top right corner.

At the start of the second half, Rinda continued right where the Tigers left off. She took a shot from 20 yards and beat Blackbird keeper Jessica Sexton in the upper right 90.

The Blackbirds had a goal called back in the 65th minute after a yellow card on Towson gave LIU Brooklyn a free kick just outside the box. A Blackbird player headed in the service, but was called for being offside.

The Tigers return home to open Colonial Athletic Association play next weekend, hosting Delaware on Sept. 26 at 3 p.m. and Drexel on Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. at the Tiger Soccer Complex.
