Colorado College wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a 2-1 victory over Colgate University on Sunday afternoon at CC’s Stewart Field.

Despite dominating play for most of the game, the Tigers had to survive a tense final five minutes after the Raiders scored while playing a man down.

CC took a two-goal lead when junior midfielder Madison Whitehead converted on a penalty kick in the 74th minute. Freshman midfielder Jenna Panepinto earned a red card when she pulled Brittney Lyman down from behind on a breakaway at the top of the box.

Whitehead calmly put a low shot past senior goalkeeper Ashley Walsh at the right post for her second-consecutive game-winning goal and the third of her career. At that point, it appeared Colorado College was well on its way to a fourth consecutive shutout.

Colgate, which managed only two shots while at even strength, cut CC’s lead in half when a long pass from senior defender Sarah Henderson slipped through the Tiger defense and senior forward Jillian Kinter got a shot off before senior goalkeeper Hanna Berglund could get to the ball.

Kinter’s goal snapped the Tigers’ shutout streak that had reached 386:53 over a five-game period.

CC broke the scoreless deadlock 2:34 into the second half on a header by sophomore midfielder Kaeli Vandersluis. Senior forward Brittney Lyman started the play with a cross from the left side and sophomore forward Jaclyn Silsby used her head to flick the ball across the crease to Vandersluis.

Lyman became the 14th player in program history to record 50 career points, and is now tied with Meagan McGuire (1993-96) on the all-time list.

Walsh finished with eight saves, including five in the first half when the Tigers enjoyed an 11-1 advantage in total shots. Her best stop occurred in the 27th minute on a shot by Lyman from eight yards out in front of the right post.

Sophomore defender Chelsea Roche prevented a goal when she cleared the ball off the goal line after Walsh made a save on a shot by Lyman. Colorado College also had near misses when sophomore midfielder Jessie Ayers and Silsby rang shots off the crossbar, the second of which came on a bicycle kick in the 55th minute.

Berglund made her only save with 25:05 remaining in the game on a header by Kinter from 15 yards out after the senior forward ran down a long pass.

The Tigers improved to 5-1-3 overall and 4-0-2 at home with their fourth consecutive victory. Colgate dropped to 5-4-2.

Colorado College begins Conference USA play next weekend when it opens a four-game road swing with contests at Marshall University and East Carolina University on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
