Tigers Roar From Behind to Tie SMU
Sophomore forward Jaclyn Silsby and sophomore midfielder Jessie Ayers scored just 1:32 apart midway through the second half to lift Colorado College to a 2-2 tie at SMU on Sunday afternoon.
Silsby ignited the comeback in the 70th minute when she directed a cross from senior forward Brittney Lyman into an open net on the right side.
Lyman climbed into a tie with Ann Cernicek (1984-87) and Amara Wilson (2004-07) at No. 13 on CC’s all-time points list. She also became the 28th player in school history to reach double figures assists.
Ayers tied the game with 19:25 remaining with an unassisted tally. It marked the second time this season she has scored late in the second half to help the Tigers salvage a tie.
Freshman goalkeeper Heather Scheele made four saves, including one in overtime.
The Mustangs got on the board in the 24th minute when Shelby Redman converted a penalty kick, SMU’s third of the weekend. Briana Gaines made it 2-0 just 4:47 before halftime when she scored on a header off a cross from Courtney Smith.
Colorado College dominated the second half and nearly took the lead in the 84th minute, but Shannon Moroney made her only save on a shot by sophomore midfielder Kaeli Vandersluis.
"We showed unbelievable character today," head coach Geoff Bennett said. "We never stopped believing and played hard for all 100 minutes. I am very proud of this group."
The Tigers finished with an 11-10 edge in total shots, while the Mustangs had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
CC completed its four-game Conference USA road swing with a 2-1-1 record and improved to 7-2-4 overall.
The Mustangs are 5-5-2 overall and 1-1-2 in league play.
Colorado College opens a four-game home stand next week when the University of Memphis and UAB visit Stewart Field on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
