Titans Pull Away From Cardinals In Home Debut

The UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team rallied back from an early deficit to defeat Saint Mary's University (Minn.), 3-1, on Saturday (Sept. 10) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Oshkosh (1-2) scored late in the first half and two more times during the second period to win its home opener. The Titans' defense was airtight in the closing 45 minutes as they held the Cardinals without a shot.

During the contest's 16th minute (15:40), Amanda Rahman knocked a 20-yard shot into the corner of the net to give the Cardinals (0-3) the lead. Teri Valenzuela was credited with the assist.

Saint Mary's University held its lead until Kali Jahn fired a shot on goal in the 38th minute of play. The ball bounced off Cardinal goalkeeper Cassie Hulett, but UW-Oshkosh's Becca Blue stepped up and drilled a strike into the goal at the 37:54 mark of the contest.

UW-Oshkosh's match-winning tally came off Megan White's corner kick. White lifted the ball in front of the net, where Chelsea Kierszh headed it through to give the Titans a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute (56:49) of play.

UW-Oshkosh salted the game away on Carmen Fiordellisi's unassisted goal in the 82nd minute (81:36).

Blue paced the Titans with three shots, while Amanda Leach compiled two. All three Saint Mary's University shots came off the foot of Rahman. UW-Oshkosh finished with an 11-3 edge in shots and a 7-0 margin in corner kicks.

Katie Berkopec  earned the Titans' goalkeeping win after going without a challenge in the second half. UW-Oshkosh's Brittany Walder recorded two saves and allowed one goal during the first 45 minutes. Hulett went the distance guarding the Cardinals' goal and totaled four saves.

UW-Oshkosh faces Lawrence University on Sunday (Sept. 11) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.
