Titans Shock Perennial WIAC Power
Led by the scoring of Jennifer Nesbitt (Sr. • Sturgeon Bay) and the goalkeeping of Brittany Walder (Sr. • Waukesha), the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team earned a stunning 1-0 triumph over perennial WIAC power UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday (Oct. 12) in Stevens Point.
UW-Oshkosh's victory was just its third over UW-Stevens Point in 22 meetings (3-18-1 record) and its first since a 1-0 win in 2006. UW-Stevens Point, which has captured 14 WIAC titles since 1992, is the three-time defending league champion.
Nesbitt broke a scoreless tussle when she sailed a shot into the back of the net in the 57th minute (56:32) of play. Her third goal of the season came off a pass from Chelsea Kierszh (So. • Oshkosh).
UW-Oshkosh (8-5/4-2 WIAC) won the match despite being held to just four shots and one corner kick. Nesbitt launched two shots for the Titans and Kierszh and Becca Blue (Jr. • Kimberly) one each. UW-Oshkosh had one shot saved by UW-Stevens Point goalkeeper Brittany Marx.
UW-Stevens Point (8-5/3-3 WIAC) attempted 13 shots, including Kim Getman's boot that hit the post in the 76th minute (75:08) of action. The Pointers, who picked up four corner kicks, were led by the three shots of both Megan Mahoney and Jessica Ruch.
Walder recorded her 12th career shutout by saving seven UW-Stevens Point shots, including six in the second half. She was on the losing end of the Titans' 1-0 setback to the Pointers a year ago.
UW-Oshkosh goes for its fourth straight victory when it travels to Carroll University on Tuesday (Oct. 18).
