Trine Wins First Conference Game Since 2004
ALBION, Mich. - It was a huge step forward for the Trine University women’s soccer team as they won their first MIAA game since 2004 with a 1-0 victory over Albion College. The Thunder are now 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.
Trine came out firing as they outshot the Britons 7-to-3 in the opening half. One of those shots came off the foot of leading goal scorer sophomore Kristin Elliott (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster). Freshman Melissa Smiles (Davisburg, Mich./Holly ) found Elliott on a breakaway who then chipped the ball over the Albion goalkeeper to net what would be the only goal of the game. The goal was Elliot’s fourth goal of the season and third game-winner.
Albion outshot the Thunder in the second half, but senior goalie Jen Wall (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) played solid to earn her second shutout of the season while making five saves.
Head Coach Terry Stefankiewicz has brought a sense of excitement to the team, as the Thunder have already equaled their season best win total since Trine joined the NCAA. Trine’s last conference win came back on November 9, 2004, when the then Tri-State beat Adrian 2-1 in overtime.
Trine will look to make it two in a row when they travel to Adrian on September 22 for a 7:00 p.m. game.
