Tritons Edged by Toros at Home Depot Center, 1-0

October 5, 2011
CARSON, Calif. -The UC San Diego men's soccer team fell to Cal State Dominguez Hills 1-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Friday night at the Home Depot Center.

The Tritons drop to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in CCAA play while the Toros improve to 4-2-1 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play.

"We played really hard tonight and we left it all out on the field," said UCSD head coach Jon Pascale. "I think we definitely saw more of the ball throughout the game, but they were pretty strong on the counter."

UCSD earned a corner kick in the 77th minute. The Toros were able to clear Cory Wolfrom's corner and broke out on a counter attack. Ronald Ybarra collected the ball and found Jordan Rover upfield. Rover threaded a pass to Henry Calistro and Calistro touched it past UCSD goalkeeper Jesse Brennan for the match's only goal.

The Tritons nearly evened the match before full time, but CSUDH keeper Juan Quiroz cleared a ball off the line with just over a minute remaining to preserve the Toro lead.

Sam Ball led all Tritons with three shots overall and two shots on goal. Wolfrom, Gavin Lamming, Alex Portela and Taylor Wirth all tallied a shot apiece. Brennan made four saves in his first game starting at goalkeeper for the Tritons this season.

Despite the loss, the opportunity to play at the Home Depot Center made a lasting impression on the Tritons.

"I think they enjoyed the experience," said Pascale. "The field was huge and in great shape, and it was a great atmosphere there tonight."

UCSD will host its second home match this season against Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
