Tulsa Earns 1-0 Overtime Win Over #19 SMU

September 24, 2017

Gustavo Vargas headed in a goal at the 93:47 mark to give the Tulsa men’s soccer team a 1-0 win over #19 SMU on Sunday afternoon at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.  TU moved to 3-3-1 on the season and 1-0 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Mustangs fell to 6-2 overall and 0-1 in the league.

“Obviously it was the first game in conference play and we wanted to get off to a good start here at home and we did that,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said.  “SMU is a very good team, very experienced, and dangerous on corners and set pieces, but we did a good job of taking that away from them.  We maintained our composure and put together a pretty disciplined performance so I’m pretty happy with the guys.”

After 90 minutes without a goal, Tulsa and SMU began the first overtime period and were nearly four minutes in when Miguel Velasquez took a corner kick off the near side, sent the ball to the far post and Vargas headed it in.

“It was a tremendous ball by Miguel,” McIntosh said.  “He put it in with pace and in the right area, and Gustavo hammered it.  I am really happy for both of those guys.”

Tulsa had a 10-9 lead in shots, while SMU had a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal, and TU had a 6-2 lead in corner kicks.

Alex Harris had a team-best three shots, while Rollie Rocha added two attempts, and five others had one shot.  Marcel Da Silva logged all 93:47 in goal and picked up three saves.

Tulsa will return to action on Friday, Sept. 29 against UConn.  Game time is set for 6:00 pm in Storrs, Conn.
