Tulsa Earns a 2-0 Win Over Temple

October 17, 2015

Michael Mitrik and Zach Jackson both scored a goal late in the second half to give Tulsa a 2-0 win over Temple on Saturday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.  The Golden Hurricane moved to 6-5-2 on the season and 2-2-1 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Owls fell to 9-4-2 overall and 1-4 in the league.

“I thought the first half was fairly even, but our possession wasn’t good enough,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said.  “We made some adjustments at halftime and I thought we connected better in the second half and created more good chances.  Zach got his second goal of the year and then Michael got his first career goal.  I am proud of those guys for coming in off the bench and finding a way to impact the game.”

Neither team found the back of the net for the first 70 minutes off the clock, but Mitrik punched in a goal from eight yards out off a pass from Geoffrey Dee to give Tulsa a 1-0 lead in the 71st minute.  In the 82nd minute Jackson added a score for the Hurricane as he picked up a pass from Ray Saari and drilled in a shot from 22 yards out.

Cole Poppen had a team-best three shots, while Cameron Drackett, Munashe Raranje and Jackson all had two attempts.  Jake McGuire logged all 90 minutes in goal, picked up six saves and earned his first shutout of the season.

Temple took a 15-14 lead in shots, including a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal, while Tulsa had a 7-4 lead in corner kicks.

Tulsa will return to action on Wednesday, October 21 against SMU.  Game time is set for 7:00 pm in Dallas, Texas.
