Tulsa Tallies 2-1 Win Over Denver

October 10, 2017

Joe Ruiz and Miguel Velasquez each scored a goal to give the Tulsa men’s soccer team a 2-1 win over Denver on Tuesday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.  TU moved to 4-5-1 on the season, while DU fell to 6-6 overall.

“I thought we played well in the first half, we moved the ball and defended fairly well,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said.  “It was good that after we gave up the goal we learned from last week when we were up 1-0 and gave up a goal and then conceded two more.  This time we held our ground and went up 2-1 and finished the game well.”

Ruiz scored on a diving header off a corner kick taken by Velasquez at the 28:26 mark to give Tulsa an early lead.  Andre Shinyashiki evened the score in the 56th minute as he shot from four yards out off a cross by Eric Kronenberg, but Velasquez recorded the game winner as he registered a score off a free kick from 22 yards out.

Tulsa had an 11-9 lead in shots, including a 4-3 edge in shots on goal, while both teams had five corner kicks.

Harris Partain had a team-best three shots, while Velasquez and Alex Harris each added two attempts.  Cooper Clark returned to goal for the first time since September 1 and registered two saves.

Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, October 15 against UCF.  Game time is set for Noon in Orlando, Fla.
