LAS VEGAS – The UC Davis men’s soccer team jumped to an early lead and held on for a 3-1 win over Central Arkansas Sunday at the UNLV Nike Invitational in Las Vegas.  Senior Paul Marcoux scored twice in the first half to give the Aggies the advantage and Juan Hernandez sealed the win with a goal midway through the second half.

With the win, UC Davis improves to 2-1 on the season while Central Arkansas falls to 2-1.

The Aggies’ offense struck first as Marcoux’s first goal found the back of the net in the eighth minute of action.  A Jason Santos free kick rebounded to Marcoux who blasted the shot through the goalie to give UC Davis the 1-0 lead.

Marcoux struck again in the 24th minute when he tapped in a rebound off the crossbar.  Chris Leer and John Joslin were credited with the assist as UC Davis went up 2-0.

Central Arkansas cut the Aggie lead in half in the 36th minute when Ricky Garcia headed in a high pass from Dustin Horn over UC Davis goalkeeper Ryan McCowan.

As play resumed in the second half, Hernandez scored the third and final goal for UC Davis in the 58th minute off an assist from Santos in the middle of the box.

The Aggies put up eight total shots to six from the Bears.  Central Arkansas goalkeeper Patxi Shortsleeve had two saves while McCowan had one for UC Davis.
UC Davis will travel to Los Angeles to take on UCLA at Drake Stadium Thursday, Sept. 10.  Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm PT.
