UCSD Men Play to 1-1 Draw With Stanislaus

October 11, 2014

LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego and Cal State Stanislaus traded goals in either half and had their meeting finish in a tie, 1-1, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men’s soccer action at Triton Soccer Stadium on Friday night.

With the result, UCSD moved to 8-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the CCAA. The Tritons are now 0-1-1 in overtime contests in 2014, with both coming at home. Cal State Stanislaus is left at 4-4-3 overall and 2-1-2 in league play.

The Tritons had taken two straight over the Warriors heading into the match, each in shutout fashion. They had also won two meetings in a row in La Jolla.

At the 35:15 mark on Friday night, Stanislaus finally snapped a lengthy scoreless streak on the Tritons’ home turf of 294:48. The visitors earned a free kick looking at the opposing goal straight on from a fair distance. Substitute Gerardo Cazares, a junior, took the kick, with the ball deflecting through the UCSD wall and landing in the path of Rafael Chavez. The freshman calmly slotted his shot to the left of Triton net-minder Cameron McElfresh for his first collegiate goal.

UCSD found its equalizer at 62:32. Freshman winger Sean Pleskow took a right-footed shot from around the penalty spot that seemed to take multiple deflections between Warrior defenders and perhaps even goalkeeper Clint Long, on its way into the lower left corner for his second goal of 2014.

McElfresh made five saves in goal. Long finished with a trio of stops for Stanislaus.

The Warriors outshot the Tritons on the night, 17-15, including 4-2 over 20 minutes of overtime. UCSD senior Brandon Bauman took a match- and career-high six shots.

The Tritons’ best chance to score over the first 45 minutes was a near-post header by sophomore Malek Bashti off a right-sided cross from senior strike partner Alessandro Canale that went wide to the right in the 14th. UCSD then also produced a decent opportunity to take all three points in the 81st when the second of back-to-back Bauman efforts was barely tipped over the crossbar by Long for a corner kick.

UCSD stays an unbeaten 6-0-1 against Stanislaus in La Jolla since the teams became CCAA foes in 2000, with the Warriors managing two goals in those seven matches.

UCSD remains in La Jolla and hosts Cal State East Bay this Sunday, Oct. 12. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. at Triton Soccer Stadium, after the Triton women take on the Pioneers at noon.
