UCSD Nets First Home Win on Wolfrom’s Timely Goal

October 5, 2011
LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's soccer team topped Cal State San Bernardino 1-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Sunday afternoon at Triton Soccer Field.

Cory Wolfrom fooled CSUSB keeper Tanner Olinger in the 74th minute. After receiving a pass on a short-corner from Anisheh Bagheri, Wolfrom sent in a cross from the left side to the top of the six yard box, forcing Olinger to make a decision. Olinger let the ball bounce in the goal box, but couldn't get a hand to it as the ball hopped into the side-netting inside the far post.

The score marked the first goal of Wolfrom's career and Bagheri's assist was his first this season. UCSD snaps a two-match losing skid and improves to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in CCAA play. CSUSB remains in last place in the CCAA South with a 0-5-1 conference mark and a 2-5-1 overall record.

"I couldn't be happier for the guys, especially considering the energy they expended on Friday night [at Cal State Dominguez Hills]," said UCSD head coach Jon Pascale. "We did the little things well today and it was a true team effort."

Jesse Brennan totaled five saves in just his second start of the season. Both keepers did well in the first half to keep the danger to a minimum, each coming out on numerous crosses to prevent any legitimate offensive chances.

UCSD nearly opened the scoring in the 32nd minute as they earned a corner kick after a tussle in the box. Bagheri drove a low ball to the front post for Wolfrom, allowing Wolfrom to flick it into the middle of the goal. Gavin Lamming leapt to meet the flick, but his header from four yards out sailed just over the bar.

Brennan was called into action 20 minutes into the second half, as CSUSB striker Julio Ayala fired a shot to the far post from the right side, 28 yards away. The ball tailed to the top right corner of the goal due to the strong wind, but Brennan leapt high to his right and palmed the ball over the bar for a corner kick. Despite quadrupling the Tritons in corner kicks, 8-2, the Coyotes could not break the seal.

"As long as we work hard together and finish our opportunities we'll be fine," said Pascale. "We got some great work from the guys of the bench today."

The Tritons will end their three-match home stand next Friday and Sunday against Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay, respectively. UCSD will kick-off against CSUMB at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Tritons face CSUEB at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
