TRITONS BEGIN CONFERENCE SCHEDULE
The UC San Diego women's soccer team opens California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play this weekend. The Tritons turn around after hosting Cal State L.A. in a 1-1 draw this past Monday night, and travel up to Los Angeles for a 7 p.m. rematch with the Golden Eagles at Jesse Owens Track this Friday, Sept. 26. UCSD then welcomes Cal Poly Pomona into La Jolla on Sunday, Sept. 28. Kickoff at Triton Soccer Stadium is set for 2 p.m. All games this week will have live stats. All regular-season matches at Triton Soccer Stadium are free to attend.

NEW YEAR, NEW FORMAT IN CCAA
The CCAA has made changes to its regular-season and tournament formats in men's and women's soccer for the 2014 season. The six-team, two-division alignment is no more, now with just one 12-team league table. Rather than a 16-game regular-season schedule with two matches against divisional opponents and one against out-of-division foes, each team will face one another once, for a total of 11 CCAA contests. The top six teams in the final standings advance to the CCAA Championship, up from four in prior years. The first- and second-place finishers get first-round byes, with those two games held at campus sites of the higher seeds. The venue for the 2014 CCAA Championship semifinals and final was announced last week as Warrior Stadium on the campus of Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock for the second year in a row and the fifth time in the last six years. The winner on the women's side will once again gain automatic entry into the NCAA Championship.

A LOOK BACK AT LAST WEEK
After having its road match at Point Loma suspended by lightning last Tuesday, Sept. 16, UCSD made the short trip up to Carson for a 4-2 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, Sept. 19. That match featured four different goal-scorers for the Tritons as Kristen SampietroJordyn McNuttCassie Callahan and Kiera Bocchino all found the back of the net, with Sampietro's the first of her college career and McNutt's her team-leading third. All six goals in the contest came after halftime, with UCSD rallying from a 1-0 deficit. The strikes by McNutt, Callahan and Bocchino came on headers. The Tritons then played to a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes of regulation and two overtimes in a second straight non-conference meeting with a CCAA foe in Cal State L.A. on Monday night, Sept. 22. UCSD answered a penalty-kick goal just 40 seconds in, with a free-kick effort by Michelle Yasutake in the 13th minute.Kelcie Brodsky came up with 13 saves, a new program standard for the Division II era (since 2000) as the Tritons surrendered a program-record 31 shots on the night.

POINT LOMA MATCH
UCSD's match at Point Loma on Tuesday, Sept. 16, which was suspended with the Tritons leading 1-0 in the 56th minute through a first-half own goal by the Sea Lions, was ruled a no contest, meaning no statistics from the game count. If rescheduled, the match would need to be made up in its entirety, but so far, no agreement has been reached between the schools to set a new date.

NEW MARK FOR BRODSKY
Junior Triton goalkeeper Kelcie Brodsky's 13 saves Monday night, Sept. 22, in a 1-1 home draw with Cal State L.A., marked a new UCSD record for the NCAA Division II era (since 2000). It fell just one shy of matching the school mark of 14 set by Jennelle Welling in 1991 against Cal State Dominguez Hills. The 31 shots Brodsky faced that evening, is believed to be a new program record for a UCSD opponent.

GREAT COLLEGIATE INTRODUCTION FOR LOCAL ROOKIE
Jordyn McNutt, a San Diego native and true freshman out of nearby University City High School, has made an exceptional impression thus far in her very first year of college soccer. From her position as a wing midfielder, she currently paces UCSD with 10 points from team bests of three goals and four assists. McNutt has started all six matches, and provided a pair of two-assist efforts against Saint Martin's and Azusa Pacific, setting up both goals in the latter contest, a come-from-behind 2-1 triumph in double overtime.

MILESTONE STRIKE FOR CALLAHAN
All-American central midfielder Cassie Callahan notched her 20th career goal to cap the scoring in a 3-0 win at Saint Martin's on Saturday, Sept. 6. She has since tallied her 21st, with no fewer than 11 of those strikes, including both so far this season, coming off of headers. Callahan led UCSD in goals, assists, total points, shots and shots on goal in each of the past two seasons. She and fellow senior Izzy Pozurama, a 2012 All-CCAA Second Team selection, are second-year captains in 2014.

HEAD COACH BRIAN McMANUS
Brian McManus is in his 28th season in charge of the UCSD women's soccer program. With a career record of 444-75-48, he has achieved the second-most wins (two behind Gabe Mejail of Merrimack College) in NCAA Division II women's soccer history. McManus' career winning percentage heading into 2014 of .828, ranks among the top 10 in college women's soccer annals, both overall (No. 9) and Division II only (No. 4). He is fifth among all divisions in wins. McManus has directed UCSD to seven national championships and a record eight CCAA banners, with the Tritons advancing to the national semifinals a remarkable 15 times in his 27 years. Under his guidance, UCSD has qualified for the NCAA tournament all 13 seasons during the Division III days, and all but two of 14 years (2004, 2013) since the move up to Division II. Last season marked the first time McManus' Tritons missed a CCAA Championship, having qualified for 13 straight after joining the conference.

ABOUT THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Cal State L.A. (5-1-1), like UCSD, will be coming off of the 1-1 tie in La Jolla on Monday night when the two rivals meet again in Los Angeles on Friday. The Golden Eagles have gone 0-1-1 on the heels of a perfect 4-0 start when they outscored opponents, 10-1. CSULA is still receiving votes just outside of the top 25 teams in the latest NSCAA national poll, and is rated sixth in the West Region. Former USC great Isabelle Harvey is in her second season at the helm.

SERIES HISTORY
UCSD leads the all-time series, 16-9-2, with the 1-1 draw already this season on Monday night in La Jolla. The Tritons had won three straight prior to their 2013 season finale, when they dropped a difficult 1-0 decision at home as current Golden Eagle senior Andrea Lammers scored with just 42 seconds left in double overtime. UCSD needed to win that contest in order to qualify for a 14th straight CCAA Championship. The Tritons took last season's first meeting, 3-1, in Los Angeles on Sept. 15, overturning a 1-0 halftime deficit through a Izzy Pozuramaequalizer and two Cassie Callahan goals. They have won four straight at CSULA since a 2-1 loss on Oct. 19, 2009.

ABOUT THE BRONCOS
Cal Poly Pomona (5-1) hosts Cal State San Bernardino on Friday evening at 4:30 p.m. prior to heading to La Jolla on Sunday. CPP is rated seventh in the West Region currently by the NSCAA. The Broncos have lost their only road match so far this year, 3-0 at Dixie State on Sept. 6. They are winners of four straight since that defeat, outscoring opponents, 11-1, during this stretch. Mike Dibbini is in his second season in charge of the Broncos.

SERIES HISTORY
UCSD leads the all-time series, 33-10-4. The Tritons had swept the season series in each of the previous four years before the teams played to a 2-2 draw in the first meeting in 2013 in La Jolla. A first-half opener by Jamie Benedetto and 70th-minute equalizer by Cassie Callahan were sandwiched around Bronco scores. The return match-up last year in Pomona went in favor of the Tritons, 1-0, on Michelle Yasutake's first college goal in the 81st minute.
