UCSD Women See Season End in Pomona Sunday

November 2, 2014

POMONA, Calif. - A goal by Arika Ontiveros just over five minutes into the match was all that was needed as third-seed Cal Poly Pomona shut out sixth-seed UC San Diego, 2-0, Sunday in the first round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women's Soccer Championship at Kellogg Field.

UCSD ended its season at 9-6-3 overall. CPP improved to 13-4-1 and will travel to Turlock, Calif., for the remainder of the league tourney. The Broncos will take on second-seeded Chico State at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 7.

The first goal of the day came at the 5:13 mark. Daisy Duran flicked a ball to Ontiveros in the box, who found the net with a high shot to the right of UCSD keeper Kelcie Brodsky.

The Tritons had a tremendous chance to even things up at 14:58 when Cal Poly Pomona was whistled for a foul in the box. Cassie Callahan took the penalty shot, which was saved by a diving Ricki Ives to keep UCSD off the board.

"Our first half was very poor," said UCSD head coach Brian McManus. "We didn't turn up in the right frame of mind, and we paid for it."

Hailey James gave the Broncos a 2-0 cushion at 57:19. With Brodsky well out of the net, James collected a pass on the left side, got past Brodsky and, with no defenders between her and the goal, easily scored.

"The second half was better, but right away, we were attacking, they cleared it out, and we got caught flat-footed and went down by two," added McManus. "After that, we were taking chances. We were able to create some opportunities, but didn't finish them.

"Overall, it was very disappointing. We just didn't have any kind of spirit, which is not how we've been over the past several weeks. The kind of play that got us here was not there today."

The Tritons out-shot the Broncos, 14-12, and had five corner kicks to their opponents' one. Kiera Bocchino, Callahan, Aimee EllisMaile Nilsson and Izzy Pozurama all had two shots to their credit for UCSD.

Brodsky made five saves in net for UC San Diego, while Ives had four stops for Cal Poly Pomona.

It was the first time in its last six matches that UCSD had surrendered a goal. The last time the Tritons gave one up was against Cal State East Bay on Oct. 12. Beginning with that 5-1 home win over East Bay, they had gone an unbeaten 5-0-1 down the stretch to earn their way back into postseason play. It was the 12th shutout of the year for Cal Poly Pomona.

The Broncos also defeated the Tritons, 1-0, on Sept. 28 in La Jolla.

Callahan, Pozurama, Kylie Hill and Kiley Leshin made their final appearances as Tritons. A fifth senior, starting center back Michelle Yasutake, has one year of eligibility still remaining.
