UCSD's Three-Match Win Streak Snapped in Chico

October 7, 2011

CHICO, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's soccer team's three-match win streak was snapped by Chico State on Friday night, as the Wildcats held off the Tritons for a 2-1 victory at University Soccer Stadium in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

The Tritons fall to 6-5 overall on the year and 5-4 in conference play. UCSD will drop to fourth place in the CCAA South Division, one-point behind third-place Cal State L.A. The Golden Eagles tied Sonoma State in Santa Rosa on Friday night, 1-1.

Chico State improved to 6-2-3 overall and 5-2-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while extending its unbeaten streak to four matches. Friday's win, coupled with Sonoma State's tie against visiting Cal State L.A., launched the Wildcats into first place in the North.

Octavio Guzman opened the scoring for the Wildcats in the 33rd minute off one of CSUC's 12 corner kicks. After UCSD goalkeeper Jesse Brennan punched out a dangerous corner, it landed at Cody Levar's feet, who played it one-time to Guzman. Guzman cracked a knuckler towards goal, forcing Brennan to his right to make the save. However, a Triton defender tried to block the shot and the ball deflected back to Brennan's left before the goalie could recover.

The Tritons would pull even in the 60th minute. Sam Ball scored his second goal in as many matches one-timing a through ball from Cory Wolfrom. It was unclear whether Ball was attempting to cross or hit a shot but it bounced off a Wildcat player and snuck-in to the near post.

Wolfrom has recorded at least a point in each of his last four matches. He has recorded five total points (three assists, goal) in the same span of time.

CSUC midfielder Chris Akwaja registered the game-winner five minutes later. Akwaja collected the ball near midfield, got around a defender, and then quickly cracked a shot from straight on. The ball bent away from Brennan before burying itself in the side-netting.

UCSD will play its final road match of the regular season on Sunday afternoon at Cal State Stanislaus. The Tritons and Warriors will kickoff at 11:30 a.m. in Turlock.
