BALTIMORE – UMBC senior forward Kay Banjo (Upper Marlboro, Md. /Largo/Towson Univ.) scored the equalizing goal in the 68’ as the 21st-ranked Retrievers rallied for a 1-1 double-overtime draw with Loyola (Md.) before 1,983 fans on Baltimore Soccer Night at Retriever Soccer Park.

The draw left both sides at 3-2-2 on the season. UMBC is now 3-1-1 versus Loyola in the last five meetings.

After a scoreless first half, UMBC came out strong in the second stanza, but a Greyhound counter in the 51’ ended up drawing a foul deep on the right wing. Loyola sophomore forward Laurin Vogel’s effort found Ryan Tuck in the middle of the box, and the sophomore defender’s header was well- placed beyond the reach of UMBC red-shirt freshman goalkeeper Phil Breno (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) and inside the far left post.    

UMBC continued to press, but it was an innocent-looking play that resulted in the tying goal. Banjo captured a loose ball about 30 yards from goal in the center of the field, drove in a few strides and then unleashed a low missile from 23 yards out that found the right corner of the net.

The score seemed to inspire UMBC further and the Retrievers pressed the play for the remainder of regulation.  Junior forward Joseph Glos (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) just missed a sliding effort to poke home a ball in the 72’ and Banjo could not finish a loose ball just yards away from the goal with less than five minutes remaining.

Loyola’s best opportunity down the stretch occurred in the 75’ when a header by senior back Joseph Cahalan got eluded Breno, but was headed away by a Retriever defender.

Loyola had the lone shot and two of the three corners in overtime, but neither team could come away with the game-winner.  UMBC outshot Loyola, 13-9, and Breno was only credited with one save, which occurred in the first extra period. Loyola sophomore netminder Matt Sanchez made two stops for the visitors.

Banjo regained the team scoring lead with his fourth of the season. The score was the 19th of his collegiate career. 

UMBC extended its home unbeaten streak to ten (7-0-3) dating back to the 2013 season.

The best opportunity in first half occurred after a nice passing play resulted in a well-struck shot by UMBC senior midfielder Mamadou Kansaye (Baltimore, Md. /McDonogh) from 20 yards out which sailed just over the crossbar in the 17’.

UMBC plays its final home game in the month of September this Wednesday, when they take on William & Mary at Retriever Soccer Park. Kick-off time is set for 7:00 p.m.
