Burlington, Vt.The UMBC men's soccer team's nine-game winning streak was halted in the America East Conference opener, as the Retrievers fell, 3-1, in a physical contest at Vermont.  UMBC is now 9-0-1 and 0-1-0 in league play, while Vermont earned its first victory of the season and improved to 1-6-3, 1-0-0.

Sophomore forward Andrew Bulls (Millersville, Md./McDonogh), the nation's leading scorer,  did keep his scoring streak alive, as he tallied his 13th goal of the campaign in the 31st minute.  Bulls has scored in all ten games to date and his 13 goals are the most in a single season for UMBC since Derek McElligott amassed 15 goals in 2003.

Vermont's Matt Hennessey was credited with the game's first goal at the 12:24 mark, when Marty Galvin's cross was inadvertently redirected into the goal by UMBC freshman back Liam Paddock (Worchestershire, England).
That score ended UMBC's scoreless streak at 447 minutes. Galvin, Vermont's Player of the Game, put the hosts in front, 2-0, in the 22nd minute, as he headed in T.J. Gore's cross.

But Bulls, UMBC's Player of the Game, cut the Vermont lead in half exactly 30 minutes into the contest.  Junior midfielder Levi Houapeu (Germantown, Md./Watkins Mill) sent a long ball into the box, and Bulls shot it over Catamount goalkeeper Tom Critz.

UMBC would pump 10 shots at Critz in the second half, but the Vermont netminder made six of his seven saves in the final 45 minutes.  Vermont added a key insurance tally in the 65th minute, as Galvin scored on a breakaway. He appeared to receive Hennessey's pass in an offsides position, but broke in and beat Retriever freshman goalkeeper Phil Saunders (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) to the netminder's right side.

Vermont was cited for 27 fouls, two cautions and saw freshman forward D.J. Edler ejected in the 84th minute. UMBC committed 12 fouls, drew no cards, and outshot the hosts, 15-13. Saunders made three saves and allowed multiple goals for the first time in his ten-game tenure.

Vermont is now 3-0-2 vs. UMBC in the last five meetings and holds a 3-2-2 series advantage. UMBC is 0-8-2 in its last ten America East road games, with its last win occurring at Maine in 2006.

UMBC returns home on Wednesday, Oct. 7 and will entertain Stony Brook at UMBC Stadium at 7:00 p.m
