UMBC Men's Soccer Downs Monmouth 3-2

September 10, 2016

Baltimore, Md.— Freshman Tre Pulliam (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) tallied a goal and an assist in a 3-2 win against the Hawks on Saturday. Three Retrievers scored, including Sammy Kahsai (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) and the game winner from Christian Morales (Gaithersburg, Md./Frederick) to move UMBC to 1-1-2.

UMBC would be outshot by Monmouth (0-3-2), 12-9, but the Retrievers had more shots on goal (6-5). Senior keeper Billy Heavner (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) made three saves to record his first win of the season.

Monmouth would get two goals in a seven-minute span to tie the match, after controlling much of the play early in the second half.

However Morales gave the Retrievers a 3-2 lead on a nifty goal in the 57th minute. The senior turned inside from 20 yards out and beat the keeper to the bottom right corner.

Pulliam got UMBC on the board just 1:59 into the match, beating his defender and putting it past Monmouth keeper Chris Seager  to give the Retrievers the early lead. Junior Sammy Kahsai added to the advantage on a free kick from 20 yards out. The Hyattsville native beat Seager into the upper left 90 on a beautiful bending ball.

UMBC controlled play in the middle in the first half, as sophomore Patrick Jean-Gilles (Woodbridge, Va./South County) and Gregg Hauck (Linthicum, Md./North County) controlled the ball and set up the Retrievers with great chances.

The Retrievers had seven shots, five on goal, to the Hawks' five in the opening 45 minutes.

UMBC is back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 14 when the Retrievers take on West Virginia in Morgantown at 7 p.m.
