UMBC Women’s Soccer Falls to Drexel, 3-0

September 1, 2013

BALTIMORE – UMBC women’s soccer senior goalkeeper Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) continued her pursuit of becoming the program’s all-time leader in saves, stopping four shots, but it was not enough as the Dragons’ freshman forward Shyanne Kimbrough registered a pair of goals in a 3-0 DU victory in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at Retriever Soccer Park. Kadet is 13 saves from tying Nadine Henchcliffe (1993-95) who leads with 339 career saves.

The Retrievers drop to 1-2-1 on the year, while Drexel improves to 2-1-1.

The Dragons took a 1-0 advantage in the first half and added a pair of insurance goals in the second half, outshooting UMBC 20-3 in the contest.

Drexel had the first scoring opportunity of the contest, as a shot from just inside the 18 yard box by sophomore midfielder Civanni Moss fired off the post, keeping the game scoreless 11 minutes into the contest.

With the game still tied at nil, it was again DU with the chance to take the lead, but senior midfielder Jess Sarkisian’s shot from straight on hit the crossbar in the 28th minute.

The Dragons were able to cash in five minutes later, as junior midfielder Megan Hammaker made her way around the Retrievers’ defense and netted her first goal of the season from just inside the 18 yard box, putting DU on top, 1-0, a lead it would take into the half.

Kadet stayed busy in the second half, facing 14 shots and five corners by Drexel. The Dragons took a 2-0 advantage in the 66th minute on Kimbrough’s first goal. A pass from junior back Melissa Chapman forced Kadet off her line and Kimbrough was able to tap the ball out of her reach to setup the finish on the open net.

Sophomore back Amira Walcott (Beltsville, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) presented the Retrievers with its best scoring opportunity of the afternoon, blasting a shot from the top of the box that sailed just right of the post.

Kimbrough added her second goal with 3:58 left in the contest, receiving a pass from Moss and finishing inside the left post.

The Retrievers return to action on Friday, Sept. 6, when they entertain Robert Morris at Retriever Soccer Park. Game time is set for 7 p.m., with all the action available live on UMBCRetrievers.com. Free USB flash drives will be given to the first 150 UMBC students in attendance.
