UNC Wilmington men defeat Delaware
October 25, 2009
WILMINGTON, N.C. – Second half goals by freshmen Seph Babington and Thomas Driver lifted UNC Wilmington to a 2-1 win over visiting Delaware on Saturday in Colonial Athletic Association men’s soccer action at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Seahawks, who improved to 9-2-3 overall, remained the only unbeaten team in the conference at 5-0-2 and moved into second place. They trail conference-leader Northeastern, a 3-0 winner over Old Dominion on Saturday, by one point. The Blue Hens suffered their fifth consecutive loss and saw their record fall to 5-11 overall and 2-6. UNCW has won all eight games in the series.
Trailing 1-0, Babington tied the game with his first career goal, coming in the 54th minute. Junior Daniel Roberts collected a failed clearing attempt and sent a cross into the penalty box. Babington was able to redirect it as his header beat the UD keeper to the far post.
With the game even at 1-all, Driver gave the Seahawks the lead in the 84th minute when he too notched his first career goal. Delaware turned the ball over at midfield and junior Tyler Clare was able to get a touch on it and send it to Driver on the left flank. Driver took one touch forward before bending his shot inside the far right post from 24 yards out.
Delaware opened the scoring in the 15th minute of the match. Darren O’Connor headed home a rebound off the cross bar for the opening tally. Kyle Davis created the scoring chance when his free kick from 40 yards out rebounded off the crossbar where O’Connor was able to head it home.
The Seahawks created numerous scoring chances, but were unable to find the back of the net until the second half. UNCW held a 22-8 advantage in shots on the evening.
UD goalkeeper Conrad Rusnak finished with four saves on the evening, including a pair early in the second half as the Seahawks attempted to draw even.
UNCW returns to action on Oct. 28, when they visit James Madison in an important road test. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
