UNCG Falls 1-0 at Home to Samford
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro women’s soccer (12-4-1, 7-2-0) fell 1-0 to the Samford Bulldogs (11-5-1, 8-0-1) on a goal in the 84th minute Sunday afternoon at UNCG Soccer Stadium. The Bulldogs claimed the Southern Conference Regular Season Championship, and the Spartans will be the No. 2 seed for the SoCon Tournament.
UNCG will play the winner of No. 10 seed VMI-No. 7 Chattanooga Saturday at 2 p.m. at home in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament. The Keydets will travel to the Mocs for the first-round matchup on Wednesday after the two teams tied 2-2 on Sunday in Lexington, Va. The SoCon will release the official bracket later on Sunday.
Samford’s goal came on a corner kick. The kick by Alyssa Frazier hit the left post, and Grace Sommi collected the loose ball and shot in into the left side of the net.
The tight game featured limited scoring chances leading up into the goal. UNCG’s best opportunity came in the 52nd minute when Nicole Souply missed just wide on an open net from a shot in the top of the box following a pass from Cienna Rideout.
UNCG goalkeeper Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper made four saves.
Samford finished with one more shot (12-11) and corner kick (4-3).
Cienna Rideout had a game-high four shots, and Jordin Mosley had three.
