UNF Takes A-Sun Victory Over Upstate

October 31, 2014

Spartanburg, S.C. – North Florida got a goal midway through the first half and added a pair of scores in the second half to take a 3-0 victory over USC Upstate in A-Sun men's soccer action Saturday night at County University Soccer Stadium.

North Florida (5-4-0, 2-1-0, 6 pts.) used a counter attack in the 22nd minute to open a 1-0 lead. After Upstate's Joe Brinckwirth just missed Marvin Schmiege with a cross in front of the goal mouth, the Ospreys went on the counter attack. Alex Morrell took a long run down the right side of the field and moved with an angle into the box. He sent a cross to the near post where Drew Spragg put the shot away from three yards to open the scoring.

Upstate (2-7-1, 0-2-0, 0 pts.) goalkeeper Jack Rubin came up huge just four minutes later. He made a diving save on Teddy Mulamba's shot. The rebound came out to Spragg, but his shot sailed over the cross bar as the score stayed 1-0 in favor of UNF.

In a battle of possession played mostly between the top of the boxes, Upstate and UNF combined for six shots in the first half. The Ospreys held the lead, 4-2, with Rubin the only keeper with a save.

Upstate had a solid opportunity to even the match a little over five minutes into the second half when Brinckwirth fought for possession deep in UNF territory and played a cross into the box where Leon Schwarzer took a shot that went just over the bar in the 51st minute.

Three minutes later, UNF made it a 2-0 game. After Upstate was whistled for a foul just outside the box on the right side of the field, the Ospreys took the kick. After the cross was cleared by the Spartans, Morrell was played a pass, beat one defender and then slid a pass into the box to Camilo Garcia who had made a run into space. Garcia put the shot away inside the far post to give UNF the two-goal lead.

UNF, which finished the game with a 12-5 lead in shots, effectively put the game away with a goal in the 69th minute. Spragg took the ball away from an Upstate player and played a through ball to Helge Pietschmann. Pietschmann found open space, was one-on-one with Rubin and put the shot away to give the Ospreys a 3-0 advantage.
