DeLand, Fla. – Marvin Schmiege scored two goals, including the equalizer with less than eight minutes to play in regulation, but Stetson took a 3-2 victory in double overtime in A-Sun men's soccer action Saturday afternoon.

Schmiege started the scoring in the 28^th minute when he took a pass from Joe Brinckwirth and found the back of the net with his fifth goal of the season to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

Stetson (6-5-2, 3-1-0 - 9 pts.), though, tied it at 1-1 after Upstate (2-8-10, 0-3-0 - 0 pts.) starting goalkeeper Hassan Haddad was called for a red card for a foul outside the box. The Hatters were given a direct kick just outside of the box and Eyal Cohen's kick found its way into the goal in the 39^th minute.

Stetson opened a 2-1 lead with under a minute remaining in the half. Upstate was called for a foul in the box and the Hatters were awarded a penalty kick. Lucas Diniz took the kick and converted as Stetson took a 2-1 advantage into halftime.

Despite the teams combining for 14 shots in the second half, the game remained a 2-1 score until late in regulation. While Upstate had played with a man down since Haddad's red card in the 39^th minute, the sides were evened after Hatter David Caufield was issued a red card in the 75^th minute. Just seven minutes later, Schmiege made the Hatters pay with his second goal of the game to tie the score at 2-2 and send the game into overtime. Leon Schwarzer assisted on the goal.

Stetson received another red card in the 84^th minute to put the Hatters a man down for the remainder of the match. Upstate used the advantage in overtime, had three shots in the first overtime period and limited the offensive production for Stetson. However, the period ended with the game still tied at 2-2.

After playing more than eight minutes in the second overtime period, Upstate was again whistled for a foul in the box. Diniz took the penalty kick, converted it and gave the Hatters a 3-2 win in the 109^th minute of play.

Upstate finished the game with a 21-15 lead in shots and placed eight of its shots on goal. Schwarzer led Upstate with six shots on the day, while both Haddad and Jack Rubin finished with four saves in the game for the Spartans. Schmiege's six goals this season is just ine shy of the Division I era (since 2007) record of seven held by Maurice Beggs in 2009.

Upstate returns to action next Saturday when the Spartans welcome Northern Kentucky to County University Soccer Stadium for a 7 p.m. match.
