USF Looking Forward to Match with Washington

TAMPA, SEPT. 20, 2014 – The Bulls will look to build of a dominant performance in a 3-1 victory over Brown on Thursday night as they welcome No. 8 Washington to Corbett Stadium on Sunday night.

Three different players scored their first goal of the season in the victory over the Bears and five different players recorded a point in the Bulls’ highest scoring output of the season.

USF will look to remain undefeated and improve to 4-0 at home on the year. The Bulls will also be looking to post their first win over a ranked opponent when the Huskies come to town.

SCOUTING WASHINGTON

The Huskies come into the matchup as one of the top programs in the country. They are currently ranked No. 8 in the NSCAA Coaches’ Poll and as high as No. 3 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Top 25 and the College Soccer News Top 25. They advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament last season before being eliminated by New Mexico.

Washington is led by senior forward Darwin Jones, who leads the team with five goals and 13 points already this season. The Huskies also boast a pair of 2014 MAC Herman Trophy candidates in midfielder Cristian Roldan and goalkeeper Spencer Richey. They bring a 5-1-0 record into Sunday’s match and defeated American Athletic Conference preseason favorite UConn 3-1 last week.

ALL-TIME SERIES

This is the first ever meeting between USF and Washington. The Bulls are 2-1-1 all-time against current Pac-12 schools and this will be the first home game for USF against a Pac-12 opponent.

NOTES

» USF is 3-0 at home this season and has only lost two of its last 13 home games dating back to last season.

» The Bulls had three different players score a goal (first of the year for each) and five different players record a point in Thursday’s win over Brown.

» Senior midfielder Lucas Baldin is tied for third in the American Athletic Conference in points (7) and goals (3).

» Baldin was named American Offensive Player of the Week and earned a spot on TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Team of the Week last week after scoring three goals in two wins for the Bulls.

» Junior goalkeeper Spasoje Stefanovic was named to the American weekly honor roll this week after earning goalkeeper of the week honors last week after posting his first-career shutout against Portland.

» The Bulls have already beaten two teams that were receiving votes in the NSCAA Coaches’ Poll (Akron & Portland).

» Wesley Charpie (No. 44) & Lindo Mfeka (No. 65) were named to TopDrawerSoccer.com’s list of top 100 players.
»  Charpie was recently named as a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award, one of the top honors in collegiate athletics for any sport.

» Mfeka & Edwin Moalosi were both named to the American Preseason All-Conference Team.

» The Bulls were picked to finish second behind UConn in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Poll.

» This year marks the 50th season of USF Men’s Soccer and the Bulls have finished under .500 only twice in that span while posting 27 seasons with double-digit wins.

» USF never gave up more than two goals in a game and gave up one or less 18 times last season. They have yet to surrender more than two goals in a game this season.

» USF won its first conference championship last season since winning the Big East Tournament in 2008. The Bulls advanced past No. 11 UConn, 6-5 in PKs, to win the inaugural American Athletic Conference Tournament Title.

COACHES’ CLINIC

The USF coaching staff has partnered with the Tampa Bay Sports Commission to put on a free coaches’ clinic before Sunday’s match against Washington. The men’s soccer program has been one of the most successful teams on campus over the years, making it to seven straight NCAA tournaments and eight of the last nine. They won the inaugural American Athletic Conference Championship last season and Head Coach George Kiefer has also led the Bulls to two Elite Eight appearances and four conference titles in his 12 seasons as head coach.
