UW-W Women's Soccer Drops Tough Road Match
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team dropped to 1-1 this season after a 3-0 road loss to Wittenberg University Sunday in Springfield, Ohio.
The Tigers pressured the Warhawk defense and junior goalkeeper Nina Yonan (Skokie, Ill./Niles North)early, with three shots on goal in the first twenty minutes. Yonan stifled all three attempts to keep the game scoreless.
Wittenberg found themselves up 1-0 after sliding a ball past Yonan in the 28th minute, and never looked back.
Insurance goals in the 62nd and 80th minutes provided plenty of cushion down the stretch, as the Warhawks struggled to get anything going offensively.
UW-W didn't record a shot until seven and a half minutes into the second half when sophomore transfer Anna Brodjian (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) fired a shot on goal that was stopped by Tiger goalkeeper Kelly Corbin.
Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) also had an opportunity to score in the 62nd minute, but her shot glanced off the crossbar.
The Warhawks tested the Tiger keeper one last time in the final minute, but Corbin made the save to complete the shutout and earn the win.
Wittenberg outshot UW-W 12-3 in the match, including 9-2 on goal.
Up next, the Warhawks will host Concordia (Wis.) on Wednesday, September 5 at 7 pm at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.
